What happens during your free foot scan

The Albert scanner is a low platform with a touchscreen. You step on with bare feet or thin socks, stand still for about 20 seconds, and step off. Both feet are scanned at the same time. You'll see a 3D model of your feet on screen along with a summary of measurements — length, width, arch height, instep, and a pressure map showing how your weight loads through each foot.

Then we sit down with you and the data, ask a few questions about how you use your shoes (running, walking, work, travel), and pull options off the wall that match your foot shape and the activity. Most people walk out understanding their feet better than they ever have.

What the Aetrex Albert scanner measures

The Albert captures more than just shoe size. It builds a full 3D profile of each foot, accurate to about one millimeter, and records how pressure distributes across the sole as you stand.

3D measurements: length, width, girth, and instep height for each foot — captured separately because most people are not perfectly symmetrical.

Why a foot scan beats guessing your size

If you can't remember the last time someone actually measured your feet, you're not alone — and there's a good chance you're in the wrong size. Feet change shape over time: ligaments stretch, arches drop, widths spread. The size that fit you at 25 may not fit at 45.

A scan also reveals what a tape measure can't: how much your left foot differs from your right, whether your arches collapse under load, and where the pressure points are that will eventually turn into a hot spot or callus. That's information we use to choose a shoe — not just a size, but a shape and a structure that works for your feet.

The scan isn't a gimmick or a sales pitch. It's a starting point. We don't try to upsell you to a "scanner-recommended" shoe — we use the data to narrow the wall down to the right candidates and then have a real conversation about fit.

How we use your scan to fit shoes and insoles

Every shoe brand uses a slightly different last (the shape the shoe is built around). Some run narrow through the toe box, some have a deep heel cup, some have a higher instep. Your scan tells us which brand shapes are most likely to feel right on your feet before you ever try one on.

For insoles, the pressure map matters most. If you're loading heavily through the ball of your foot, a metatarsal pad may help. If your arch is dropping under load, an arch-supportive insole — Aetrex, Powerstep, Currex — can change how the whole foot tracks. We use the scan data to pick a starting point, then test it in-shoe to make sure it actually helps.

Aetrex insoles built from the same data

Aetrex makes both the scanner and a full line of insoles designed around the measurements the Albert captures: memory-foam comfort insoles, support insoles for medium and high arches, and metatarsal-specific options for forefoot pressure. The match between scan and insole is direct — your arch type, instep height, and pressure map translate to a specific Aetrex model on the wall.

We carry the full line in store.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the foot scan take? +

About 20 seconds. The Aetrex Albert scans both feet at once — no need to step on it one foot at a time.

Do I need an appointment for a 3D foot scan? +

No. Walk in any time during store hours and we'll scan your feet on the spot.

Is the foot scan really free? +

Yes. The scan and the fitting consultation that follows are completely free, with no obligation to buy.

What does the Aetrex Albert scanner measure? +

Length, width, arch height, instep height, and pressure points across the bottom of each foot, accurate to about one millimeter. It also identifies your arch type — low, medium, or high — for each foot separately.

Will the scan tell me my arch type? +

Yes. The scanner identifies arch height and type for each foot independently. Many people have different arches left to right — the scan shows that clearly.

Can I use my foot scan to pick insoles or orthotics? +

Yes. Pressure data and arch type from the scan help us recommend the right insole — whether that's an Aetrex memory-foam insole, a Powerstep support insole, or a metatarsal-specific option.
