Shoes History
Our store was founded as only the second Buster Brown shoe store in the United States by two close friends, Irving Ravel and Bob Karotkin on March 7, 1937. The name was changed to Kara-Vel Shoe’s the next year and located the store between the old state Paramount movie theatres in downtown Austin, Texas. The store began as a children’s shoe store but was later expanded into men’s and women’s shoes, then orthopedics’ and finally into a full service family shoe store.
In 1960, we moved to our current location at 5525 Burnet Rd. in North Austin. In 1985, we started carrying Euro-comfort shoes and at that time we realized that “comfort and service” was going to be the basis of our business. In 1995 we added a Wellness center and by 2000, we added our first concept store with the addition of the Mephisto Shop. In 2003, we added the New Balance shop and in 2005, we added the ECCO store.
Already this year, we have purchased the Shoe Styles Store specializing in bridal, prom and oversized shoes. In addition to our online store, please come visit us at our main location in Austin, Texas with over 13,000 sq. ft of sales space specializing in the most fashionable comfort walking sandals and shoes. We also carry the widest selection of styles, sizes and widths in Central Texas.
